Hit by a drunk driver
My life is different now. I have to admit, I'm having a hard time adjusting and I keep feeling so negative. I really should just feel so grateful and blessed, and all around lucky to be alive. I am appreciative I just don't understand why, and I guess that's what hurts the most. Kevin and I are very very lucky to be alive, and we should be hurt much more then we are. All I can say is that we both know that God is aware of us, and his hands in our lives. This is what happened. Kevin was working mid shifts which is from 11:00 PM-7:00 AM, he got off early at about 1:45 AM. We'd decided to get a head start since we were both up and awake, and he was used to being awake at that time. I was the starting driver. We were about forty five minutes down the road almost to Fargo, ND. We both saw headlights in the distance, and I thought it was weird, but assumed the road curved. Within seconds the car was right in front of us, I'm positive he was speeding as well as DUI. We hit him at 80 MPH. I swerved into the right lane as soon as I could but he hit us nearly head on. It seems like something from a movie now that I think about it. We were sent rolling off the road. We rolled three to four times, and I'm remember waiting to die. I know that sounds morbid but at the time I couldn't see anyother possibility. When we stopped Kevin was able to push the windshield out with his hands and call 911. I was stuck in the car for a little bit, immediately I had pain in my left foot and could feel myself losing blood from multiple places. Several semis stopped and helped. My glasses, which I'd been wearing at the time, had flipped off somewhere and I was unable to see as well. The driver of the other car hadn't rolled but he had to be cut out of his car and life flighted to the hosiptal. He wasn't in critical condition but apparently it required the helicopter. I don't know what I would have done without Kevin, he was my knight in shining armer. He took care of everything, all the calls and everything in the hospital. He also found my contacts. We were lucky enough to salvage most of our things, among the things that are missing or damaged, my wallet, my keys, and the wedding dress. We don't know right now what's going to happen, but we are alive and will find a way to make everything work. I'll write more later.

Megan! I'm so glad you're both okay! What a horrible experience, especially being hurt and not being able to see and being stuck in the car! I'm just so glad you're both okay.
ReplyDeleteMegan,
ReplyDeleteThis morning as we were out jogging, Ben's one comment (in between ragged breaths) was that when he becomes a Legislator, the first thing he is going to do is change the law so that drunk drivers loose thier license on the first offense. I believe he went on to say something about the second offense including the death penalty...you know Ben! Anyway, you are still on our minds and we hope you are recovering quickly.
Love you!
That's horrible! Did you have to get stitches? We're so glad you're ok!
ReplyDeleteso glad things are okay megan! what's up with your fam and drunk drivers? I hope that your leg heals quickly!
ReplyDeleteI hope you are feeling better. I saw the picture of you on Ben's blog and you were in a wheelchair (of course you know this because it was you!). How long did you have to be in a wheelchair? Have you replaced the car?
