Turns out I have an arsenal of weapons at my disposal when it comes to combating the tough stuff in life. Getting down on my knees by myself and with my family to be thankful and ask for help is one of those. As is leaning on those I love, so thanks for the support, advice, and love. One of the other things that makes a huge difference in my mental, emotional and physical state is what I eat. Duh. You'd think that just knowing that sugary foods amplify my anxiety would be enough for me to stay away from them and yet that's sadly not the case.
Still, somehow, many many moons ago my sister and I managed to go a year without candy and soda for $100 so I figure with my health, wealth and happiness on the line I'm sure I can do it again. Starting today 11/3/2013 until 11/4/2014 Kevin and I are cutting out all store bought sweets and candy, soda, and fast food. I say store bought sweets because I'm not opposed to cooking healthier alternatives to sweets at home and from scratch. It will have to be planned out though and will help me avoid impulse eating. If it has a drive-through than we won't be eating there for the next year, the one exception being subway if we are traveling and lastly, if it's carbonated it will not be consumed! I know that still leaves a lot of unhealthy opportunities but it cuts out our main problem areas.
Reading in biology about cell division and function has really gotten me thinking about cutting out a lot of the chemicals and fillers that are in our diet. I'm pretty crunchy already and make our laundry detergent, toothpaste, and deodorant but I haven't been as focused on our food... mostly because I'm totally addicted to sugar. We make green smoothies, juice and take vitamins but the ratio of good to bad is not ideal and my body is feeling it. The emphasis for me is not on cutting out the crap, that's just a necessary prerequisite for the main event which is cooking wholesome and delicious foods!
I'm excited to see what changes, if any, come from this year long endeavor. I love cleanses and detoxes but since I've been either pregnant or breastfeeding for... almost three years my options have been really limited. I'm hoping this will help me feel less heavy both figuratively and literally, increase my energy and help with mental clarity.
So here is to the year of health! We're going to focus on eating wholesome foods and cooking at home. Thank goodness for Pinterest and its endless supply of amazing recipes. I need to feel better to be a better wife and mother and just a better me. I hate feeling run down. I love watching Alexander eat cherry tomatoes, they're one of his favorites. I want to instill good habits for him and the little girl and what I'm realizing is... I have to lead by example. Darn it! Now I just have to put that knowledge into action.
Ok, one more thing. I'm kind of obsessed with scientific experiments having gone through Research Methods and Stats and I'm going to be keeping a journal, a couple of times a week, of some basic measurable data and some less objective data. I'm excited to see how this plays out. Good night!

Sounds awesome. I think the journal will give you good insight. I read about a lady who was eating really healthy and feeling good and then she ate some sugary cereal and felt bad the next day. So now she calls that cereal Yucky Harms. Hope you have a lot of pictures on your board to keep you motivated.
